Jamie and the Emerald Nebula

Conte

Jamie was a little astronaut, and his home was a spaceship, round and cozy like a bubble. From his big, circular window, he could see the whole universe. Stars glittered like spilled sugar, and giant planets slept peacefully in the dark. Jamie loved the deep, velvety blue of space and the sparkling silver of the moon dust on his boots.

But tonight, something felt a little... empty. He floated over to the window and pressed his nose against the cool glass. Everything outside was beautiful, but it was all blues, purples, and blacks. Jamie missed a color. He missed green. He missed the color of soft grass, of tall trees, and of the little frog toy he had left back on Earth. He sighed a tiny, lonely sigh that fogged up the window.

He looked and looked, hoping to find a green star, a green planet, or even a green moon. But space kept its colors. Diamond-white stars, ruby-red planets, and sapphire-blue galaxies swirled outside, but there was no green. "Not even a little bit," he whispered to his reflection. He pushed himself off the window and drifted through his small room. His bed was silver, his table was blue, and his favorite teddy bear wore a tiny, shiny space helmet. Nothing was the color of home.

Just as a tear was beginning to well up in his eye, a tiny light zipped past his window. Zing! It was faster than a shooting star but softer, like a firefly. It stopped and hovered right in front of the glass, shimmering with a gentle, golden light. It was a Glimmer, a little creature made of pure stardust. It had no eyes, but Jamie felt it was looking right at him. It tilted its sparkling head and made a soft, chiming sound, like tiny bells ringing in the silence.

The Glimmer seemed to understand. It twinkled once, then twice, and then darted away, looking back as if to say, "Follow me!" Jamie smiled for the first time that night. He floated to the control panel of his little spaceship and pressed a big, friendly button. With a soft hum, the ship began to follow the tiny, golden light.

They didn't travel fast. They drifted. The Glimmer led him through a silent shower of meteors, which looked like giant, slow-motion fireworks painting the darkness with streaks of light. They passed a colossal gas giant, a planet so big it looked like a sleeping marble of orange and white. Jamie could hear it snoring, a deep, rumbling sound that vibrated through his ship and made him feel sleepy too.

Finally, the Glimmer slowed down. It stopped before a magnificent, swirling cloud of colors. It was a nebula, bigger than anything Jamie had ever seen. It was a painting made of gas and dust, with swirls of pink, violet, and gold. And there, right in the very heart of it, was the most beautiful color Jamie had ever seen in space. It was a vast, glowing cloud of emerald green. It was the green of a summer forest, the green of a shiny beetle, the green of his favorite frog toy. It glowed with a soft, warm light, like a giant, cosmic blanket.

A happy gasp escaped Jamie's lips. The green light filled his spaceship, chasing away all the shadows and all the lonely feelings. He wasn't missing green anymore; he was floating right beside it. The little Glimmer snuggled up against the spaceship's window, and its golden light pulsed gently, turning green as it reflected the nebula's color. Jamie pressed his hand to the glass, right where the Glimmer was. "Thank you," he whispered.

The Glimmer chimed its bell-like sound one last time and then zipped away, disappearing back into the sea of stars. Jamie didn't feel sad to see it go. He knew it had shown him something important: that even when you are very far from home, you can find little pieces of it in the most unexpected places.

He guided his spaceship back to its quiet spot among the stars. He floated into his silver bed and pulled up his blue covers. But his room wasn't just blue and silver anymore. Through his window, the faint, beautiful glow of the emerald nebula shone in, like a perfect nightlight, painted just for him.

And as he closed his eyes, he dreamt of green fields and tall trees, all under a vast, dark sky filled with shimmering, golden friends.
